WHAT
IS SUMMER COLLEGE BASEBALL?
The Delaware Cows baseball team is a member
of the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League... a
wooden bat league, founded in 1986 and sanctioned by
the NCAA and sponsored in part by Major League
Baseball
The purpose of summer college baseball is to showcase
those players exhibiting professional baseball
potential who have at least one year of collegiate
eligibility remaining. The Great Lakes League is one
of nine sanctioned wooden bat leagues across the
country that are regularly scouted by professional
baseball.
WHO
ARE THE COWS?
The Delaware Collegiate Baseball Club, Inc. was
formed in 1991 and began play in the Great Lakes
Summer Collegiate League the following year. The Cows
went 20-20 during their first summer and qualified
for the GLSCL tournament for the first time the very
next year. In 1996, the Cows earned a second trip to
the league postseason tournament. Two years later,
Delaware claimed its first GLSCL championship and
duplicated the feat in 2001. Since 1998, the Cows
have qualified for the GLSCL tournament every year
except one.
Highlighting the 80 plus former Cows who went on to
play professional baseball are 2001 first round draft
pick John Van Benschoten, 2002 second round pick
Steve Stanley and 2004 second round picks Brian Bixler and Mike
Ferris. In 2004, the Cows established a league record with 13
former Cows drafted.
The Delaware Cows baseball club is hosted by the
community of
Delaware,
Ohio which is just about 15 miles
north of Columbus, the state capitol. Home games are
played at Littick Field on the campus of
Ohio
Wesleyan University. The team travels to
away games via
Crosswell chartered bus service and
ballplayers (except those who live in central Ohio or
those housed by host families) reside in a university
owned three story house on campus, known as the
Tree
House. Jobs are secured for any out of
town ballplayer requesting one and they are given a
complimentary membership to the local
World Gym.
WHY
ARE WE CALLED THE COWS?
One of the first tasks attended to after the
franchise was formed was selecting a name. During the
first year of play, the team was scheduled to play
half of its games in Columbus and half in Delaware.
Because of this, "Central Ohio" was
selected as the team name. The original sponsor of
the team was Wendy's Restaurants... so, taking the
first initials of Central Ohio Wendy's,
we became the Central Ohio Cows. Though we are now
based solely in Delaware, the team nickname remains
Cows since the Central Ohio region (of which Delaware
is associated) has long been recognized for its
agricultural heritage.
